MORE FLIP FLOPS BY JOHN McCAIN

Ann McFeatters a PI columnist has written about John McCain’s willingness to switch position for political motives. I’ve commented on what I see as his changed character, in his drive to be elected, from the MCCAIN maverick U.S. Senator to a desperate presidential candidate. It is also galling to me as a Northwest resident that he played a major role in the Boeing Company’s loss of the bid for the Air Force refueling tanker to a French company. But, this involves basic character flaws in the candidate.

She notes that he reversed his long held position recently by his approval of oil and gas drilling in federal waters off our coasts. He had earlier changed his position about permitting torture of prisoners at Guantanamo. Now, he says the U.S. Supreme court decision that the Guantanamo prisoners have a legal right to apply to the courts for due process was "one of the worst decisions in the history of the country." This from the same man who first strenuously opposed Bush tax breaks for the rich as "fiscally irresponsible" and now wants the same tax cuts extended. McFeatters notes that he also was a critic of ethanol, calling it a fraud because it took as much energy to produce as it saved. Now he loves it. And, these are only a few of the significant positions he has flip flopped on while running for office. One can only assume he changes his positions based upon the most recent polling. As McFeatters says:

"Whatever happened to the straight talk express? Whatever happened to the maverick?"
