Observations from Today’s Newspaper

I am a great admirer of the ability of writers to turn a phrase, capture in a headline a story and to find the right metaphor to fit the situation. Newspaper writers generally have that skill and especially gifted sports writers. Today’s Seattle PI entertained me in that way. Columnist Joel Connelly, in writing about the New Hampshire primary, talked about Fox News getting the facts wrong and referred to it as the "We distort, You decide" network. He spoke of Bill Clinton’s claim that he "didn’t inhale" as having had the nation "doubled up, laughing." I did relate to Obama’s comment to Connelly that he knew some days "we’ll read our obituaries and find ourselves on top of the world other days." The heading of an article from a editorial commentary from Great Britain’s Economist about George Bush read: "Lame duck waddles to the finish line." That does describe the situation nicely doesn’t it?

However, my favorite article in today’s paper was about two men in New York who attempted to cash a dead man’s Social Security check. These two decided the best way to do it was to seat the deceased in a rolling office chair and push him down the sidewalks of New York to a check cashing store in an effort to convince the clerk to cash the check. Of course, this "Weekend with Bernie" scam collected a number of curious people who followed them down the sidewalk and finally it brought the police who arrested them. Now I challenge you to find a couple of people that stupid anywhere then New York.
