REPORT FROM CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO

Greetings from sunny Mexico. The sun is out and the temperature is in the 80’s. Sun screen required. We are in Cabo San Lucas at the Las Ventanas, a resort hotel on the ocean. Owned by the Rosewood hotel chain, this hotel is one of the better three luxury type resorts here. La Pamillia, which predates the other Cabo two, and Esperanza Resort all in Cabo. All three have their own unique benefits and charm, but we prefer this place, having been here several times. We come here around Thanksgiving time so we can go from here to Scottsdale for Thanksgiving there.

We arrived on an Alaska Airlines direct flight to Cabo which was totally full. We went through the strange gauntlet they have at the airport here where you collect your bags, get in line and put them into an X ray machine. You collect them on the other end and push a button. If the light is green you walk out with your bags. But, if you lose the lottery of the light and it’s red, you have to open each bag and wait for a hand inspection of the total contents of the bag. What a nuisance. Worse, I think it is at this airport where on the way out every bag must be opened for hand inspection before you check it in at the counter or maybe that’s Puerto Vallarta. I’m not sure, but it’s still a pain.

This very beautiful place has excellent food, a fitness center and the other features that make a great resort hotel. However, as I type this, sitting at an outdoor table at our room, a large black helicopter has flown by two times only 300 to 500 feet off the beach about 50 yards away. I’ve never experienced that before here and I’m hoping this is not some new sightseeing ride the hotel has introduced. It is very loud as it flies by.

The 40th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race ends Saturday the 16th in Cabo. This is the granddaddy of all desert races held November 11-16 this year. It is the longest non-stop 1,296 mile desert race. It starts in Ensenada, Baja and finishes in Cabo San Lucas. Some 450 entries from the U.S. and 15 countries are taking place. We are not here to participate and in fact, will certainly avoid the madness in Cabo when the participants invade the town.

Otherwise, there is no news and the whole purpose of being here is avoid the news so we can rest up before heading to Arizona to meet our children and grandchildren who are meeting us there for thanksgiving. I’m happy to report the helicopter has not returned since I started typing.

  1. Paul,

This was a very touching story. It really puts things into perspective. Too many times we just say we love someone. When in fact, 93% of how we communicate is not even done with words.
