Flannery O’Connor, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton & Walker Percy

I’m listening to a book on tape The Life You Save May be Your Own by Paul Elie. It deals with four Catholic writers and literary figures of the mid twentieth century, Flannery O’Connor, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton Dorothy_day and Walker Percy. I am familiar with Day and Merton, having read their work and books about them, but not O’Connor or Percy. The book is well written and I am interested in their contribution to literature, religion and intelligent investigation of issues. I admire the fact they had the ability and drive to write about issues in their life they were struggling with and by doing so gave the rest of us a window into how they dealt with them. Of course, I have long been a great admirer of Dorothy Day who is so representative of normal ordinary people, but one who grew into greatness and Merton is well known to most everyone. I am looking forward to learning more about the other two. I have just started listening on my Gig Harbor to Seattle commute so stay tuned for more reports.
